Things
Sound Engineers
need to know to make their life easier
1.
Sound travels at about 1 millisecond per foot
2.
Don’t put a condenser mic anywhere you
wouldn’t put your ear
3.
Half the square footage of a room is a good quantity
to start with when putting up absorptive materials
in a studio environment
4.
A little dip at 250hz on the main bus will help
clean up the mix in a profound way
5.
Kick drums like a dip at 400hz,
snare drums like a boost at 100hz
6.
(Sample rate/2)=Frequency response
48k/2=24KHZ
44.1k/2=22.5KHZ
7.
For each minute of finished product on your CD,
budget at least one hour of production time
(45 minutes of music = 45 hours of studio time)
8.
Think of music production as
3 phases of woodworking:
Tracking = cutting out the pieces of wood
Mixing = assembling those pieces into a chair
Mastering = final sanding, staining & varnishing
9.
Pins to the truck: the pins in a mic/mic cable
point the direction the signal is traveling
10.
I’s not the Gear, it’s what’s between the Ears
11.
Better to have it and not need it,
Than need it and not have it
12.
Always buy microphones and preamps
in pairs when possible. Why? See rule #11
